Best to go with someone, since going solo relegates you to the upstairs or back, and your bill still gets combined with someone else's.

Go to the Iron Horse, grab a pint of Brooklyn Lager and listen to a band you never heard of. Then buy their disc on the way out that night and tell all your friends about them.
